Information Fluency & Writing

• 10 Digital Writing Opportunities You Probably Know and 10 You Probably Don’t | ICT in my Classroom

  I've seen the connection between information fluency and writing since my early work researching in the field. Here's a strong blog post chock full of interesting tool recommendations.

  • On Thursday I finally had some time to sit with our Key Stage 2 (junior) literacy coordinator and talk about how technology can support writing outcomes for the Primary Framework for Literacy.
  • 10 - Myths and Legends Story Creator 2 - a free online version of Kar2ouche that focuses on a specific story type. Classes can have unique logins and they can record audio and build scenes from a set of graphics, their own images can be imported. A great alternative to Kar2ouche and perfect for the Myths and Legends unit.
  • Wordle - I thought this little tool would be great to analyse written stories in the same way Steve Kirkpatrick has done with his class. A Wordle could be a great way to introduce a text - exploring what is emphasised to help understand the type of writing it is taken from. Is it instruction, explanation - how can you tell? Another idea is that the children create a poem as a Wordle, it would certainly be challenging the form of conventional poetry.

Google Goodies: Resources to consider

• Google for the Cell Phone

  Who needs Internet access when you can google using their SMS service! This is very slick! I can search for pizza in my location, get the results, and then within minutes call them and order! How sweet! This site also contains information on "how to" use it!

  Overview of Google Sites web/wiki building system. Animated, interactive tutorial with audio track. Useful for initial orientation.

• Google Apps Training

  Google Apps Start page. Tutorials from Google on Calendar, Talk, Docs, Sites. These are audio enhanced overviews with animated graphics. Good Stuff. However the catch is that this is an Apps oriented overview. It's intended for webmasters who are installing Google apps on their domains. The tutorials still apply to the individual Google tools, but it might be confusing for folks who are only interested in a single product.

  Thanks Jen for pointing out this software. I appreciate the very cool aspects of using this software on a smart phone. NO doubt about it: phone applications a great way to extend the internet, 21cif, and e-learning. 
  
  I'm surrounded by iPhones! All of my kids have them, and my younger brother is part of a start-up (Appy Entertainment) creating iPhone applications. I've also used a friend's iPhone to surf into one of my Moodle classes. Everywhere I look I see iPhones!
  
  So, I get it! (But I don't want it!) The screen size is just too small for me. I'm very interested in digital reading, but haven't made the jump to a specialized e-book readers. Instead, I'm thinking about a laptop with a wireless chipset. I want something ultra light with a full sized screen that provides me with full phone capability, access to high speed internet / phone net, and strong netbrowsing. 
  
  The gear is out there right now... However, I'm waiting for the tech to mature and the prices to fall.  ~ Dennis (AKA wiredinstructor... but I'm willing to go wireless... really! )
